The high glass ceiling showcased a cluster of stars that surpassed any painting Florin had ever laid eyes on. Different hues of blues, reds, purples swirled together to create a masterpiece that grabbed his attention and refused to let go.

As the argument in the room raged back and forth, Florin wondered what it would be like if he had been born to another family, in another time, or another place.

Would his life be easier? Would it be stress-free?

He envisioned a wife and kids waiting for the sound of his footsteps, waiting to hear the rustle of his clothes before they came leaping at him. Hugging him for all he was worth till the smile on his face threatened to crack it.

Would he be happier? Would he be content?

Would he be free?

Thoughts of his own lonely childhood brought back memories of isolation and confusion, while he watched other members of his family rush from one meeting to the next. There was never enough time to play. There was never enough time to enjoy the pleasures of the garden, which he loved so much, before he was pulled away to shadow someone at some board meeting with a political leader they needed to gain favour with.

He had always promised he would do things differently when he had children of his own. That he would allow them to enjoy their childhood, that he would spend time with them. But as time passed, he didn't know how that dream would ever become a reality.

Those dreams required freedom, and now--

"Ahem!"

Florin drew his attention back to the room. Every face at the Council table looked his way.

"Lord Fren, we were hoping that you could shed some more light on the matter of The Eye?" Lord Aurum said, his short fat green fingers laced under his chin.

"The Eye?" Florin said with a raised eyebrow. "What of it? I thought the matter was all but resolved."

"That may be, but we still don't know who built the Starship or who their backer was. To believe that a group of escaped convicts could mastermind such a thing is preposterous. My sources believe that there is something bigger at play here."

Florin lowered his gaze and drummed his fingers along the ornate black desk in front of him. He was no closer to finding the evidence that he wanted. No matter where he looked, Lord Portendorfer's involvement couldn't be found. Florin just needed more time, but that was something he was quickly running out of.

"I do believe, my boy, that last time we spoke, you had a lead which would shed some light on the case. I believe your words were 'This person will bring the right people to justice once and for all', but, as far as I can see," Lord Portendorfer said, spreading his hands wide, "you have yet to bring any such person to our attention."

Florin's head snapped up and glared at Lord Portendorfer. "I... There was an unfortunate event which took place--"

"Boy, do you have the person in your custody or not?"

Lord Jaro chuckled and his forked tongue darted from his mouth.
